In this project, I acted as a lecturer in the Craft Department, Faculty of Art and Design, Institut Teknologi Bandung, and collaborated with Professor Miki Yamamura and Professor Akiko Takenaka from the Joshibi University of Art and Design, Tokyo. We aimed to explore how indigo dyes are used in different countries, employing similar techniques, such as resist dyeing. Japanese people utilised the indigo vat in their traditional resist-dyeing techniques (Shibori and Tsusugaki), and similarly, Indonesian people use indigo dyes to create Batik and Jumputan cloth. The project is held as a knowledge exchange, with me conducting a Batik workshop for the students at Joshibi, Japan, and Professors Takenaka and Yamamura teaching a Tsusugaki workshop at ITB, Bandung.Â
